A Risky Occupation
Nadya married Marcos Gutierrez in 1996, the same year she graduated from Mt. San Antonio College with her psychiatric technician license. In addition, she began working at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California, a psychiatric institution. The work was rewarding, but it wasn’t easy, and it was even dangerous for her. Nadya’s main ambition was to start her own family, but she also wanted to have a meaningful career. However, something bad happened at her job, and her life became a long roller-coaster ride as a result.
Tragedy Strikes
Nadya Suleman was working in a psychiatric hospital when she was caught in the midst of a horrific incident on September 18th, 1999. A riot broke out at the facility due to the presence of twenty patients, and Nadya tried to intervene right away. During the commotion, one of the female patients hurled a wooden desk into the air, which landed on Nadya’s back and caused her herniated disc injury. Workers’ compensation provided some relief, and Nadya was awarded $170,000, but the money only helped her get by for a while and was the least of her problems.
