King George V and Mary of Teck had six children, although one died before reaching adulthood. The throne passed to Edward VIII after the king died. He did, however, renounce the kingdom in order to marry a divorced American woman. This is how King George VI ascended to the throne. Queen Elizabeth II succeeded to the throne after his death.
