Stray Ball
Baseball is sometimes described as a game of inches, and Sophia Minnaert discovered this firsthand in 2013. After all, if Minnaert, a Fox Sports sideline reporter, had stood just a few inches to one side, she would not have been frightened by a stray baseball. The event occurred immediately before the Pirates’ 5-2 victory over the Brewers in the top of the third inning. Minnaert was ready to announce the results of the broadcast’s Twitter poll when a wayward ball struck her right palm, sending her microphone flying and leaving her speechless! Minnaert, being the pro that she is, immediately retrieved her microphone and even finished the section!
One Is Not Enough
Emily Jones, a veteran sports reporter for Fox Sports, is used to having Powerade thrown at her during post-game interviews. So, starting in 2017, Jones began bringing silly string with him to ward off any would-be pranksters. However, the writer quickly discovered that even silly threads could not stop a determined baseball player. In 2017, when interviewing Texas Rangers’ Adrian Beltre, two more Rangers players approached Beltre and Jones with a Powerade bucket. Despite the fact that Jones had covered the players in silly string, they nevertheless dumped the ice-cold sports drink all over the reporter! Jones, being the true professional that she is, simply shrugged it off.
