These incapacitating spasms can occur suddenly due to the combination of physical strain and cold water temperatures. Imagine being unable to stay afloat far from shore due to a muscle spasm. A regular swim could swiftly devolve into a struggle for survival in such a situation, with the very real possibility of drowning.
