Robby Krieger
Educated in flamenco and jazz, Robby Krieger surpassed rock and roll when most players were still bound by the blues. In The Doors, he has a talent for improvisation, following Jim Morrison’s wildest journeys, writing some of their hottest songs (“Light My Fire”), and make up for it in their keyboard-drum-guitar lineup.
Joni Mitchell
The Canadian singer-songwriter, Mitchell, draws her influence from folk, pop, classical and jazz. Her songs often draw from social and philosophical ideas, including emotions and sensitivity. She is the winner of nine Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Almost every song she has composed on the guitar uses an open, or non-standard, tuning; she has written songs in some 50 tunings, playing what she has called “Joni’s weird chords”. The use of alternative tuning allows guitarists to create accompaniments with more variety and wide-ranging textures.
