In 1997, the Queen gave Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie a £1.5 million house in Surrey. The property, known as Birch Hall, was purchased on behalf of Her Majesty by trustees. The princesses did not move in because their mother was concerned that they would be unable to afford the upkeep fees.
